Billboard magazine features Muzology!

With her program Muzology, Dr. Lana Israel, memory expert - and unlikely industry insider - is proving that a catchy tune can make math stick for even the most struggling students. The ninth-graders in Shirley Forehand’s classes are terrified of fractions — but they do like pop music. So over the past school year, she played them music videos, though maybe not the kind once seen on MTV. In one, a young man in a brown cap sings, “A fraction’s simplified/When you can’t divide/The numerator and denominator/By the same number on your calculator.”

Knox County Schools Class Mixes Music and Math

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - Students in Mrs. Connie Boyd’s math class at West Valley Middle School in Knox County learn math using a program called Muzology. Music videos, with a singer singing about a concept, have students dancing in their seats while learning a math. “I used to kind of struggle with math but I’ve noticed that I’m starting to understand it more. Because the videos explain it. And they also show you how to do it,” said Cate Smithely, a student in Boyd’s seventh grade honors math class.
